Questions & Answers

When did you join IMET?

I joined IMET in 2012, so have been here since the start, although I have 30 years of industry experience.

What do you do here at IMET? What is your main responsibility?

I’m the European Quality Manager, so my main responsibility is to oversee all aspects of quality assurance with IMET’s operations and associated systems. I’m based at IMET’s head office in Livingston.

What do you need to be good at to do your job well? What particular skills and knowledge do you have?

Strong communication is essential in this role, as quality depends on effective collaboration across teams and clear alignment with customer requirements. A detailed understanding of both operational processes and quality systems is also critical.

My 30 years’ experience has helped me build up a substantial knowledge base across many areas, including the sorting and processing of turnings, particularly crushing and cleaning methods, as well as the sorting and processing of solid, secondary metals. This operational experience allows me to apply quality principles in a practical, real-world way and to support continuous improvement across the business

What problems do you need to overcome as part of your work?

There are rarely major issues in day-to-day operations. When challenges do arise, our robust quality systems allow us to quickly identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and ensure consistency is maintained across our European operations.

How do you know when your work has gone well?

When our operations run smoothly, quality standards are consistently met, and both customers and internal teams have confidence in our processes.

What do you enjoy most about your job and working in this industry?

This is a fascinating industry where, to coin a phrase, every day is a school day. I’ve been fortunate to be part of a dynamic business that has allowed me to work with passionate and knowledgeable people, and I particularly enjoy helping teams develop and perform at a high level.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy playing golf—although I don’t manage to play as often as I’d like. I also enjoy spending time with my family and, having recently had some work done on the house, am becoming more interested in gardening.
