Questions & Answers

When did you join IMET?

I joined IMET in April 2022, after working in the aerospace industry for a few years.

What do you do here at IMET? What is your main responsibility?

I’m the Sorting Team Leader. My main responsibilities are to make sure the sorting and processing of alloys runs smoothly, that trucks are loaded and unloaded correctly, and all the relevant paperwork is completed. I also help to train our team on the shop floor.

What do you need to be good at to do your job well? What particular skills and knowledge do you have?

I need to have a good knowledge of different alloys and processing routes. I also need to have good attention to detail and good communication skills as things change in this industry a lot and I need to make sure the team follows the right procedures.

What problems do you need to overcome as part of your work?

The biggest problem we have is preventing contamination. When we sort materials, we have to make sure they’re 100% correct and any contaminated material is separated. Where we can, we remove contamination in our upgrade process. Where material can’t be upgraded, it’s downgraded and kept separate from the pure material.

How do you know when your work has gone well?

We know we’ve done a good job when we receive positive feedback as part of our weekly operations meeting. I always pass this feedback on to the team on the shop floor.

What do you enjoy most about your job and working in this industry?

I enjoy all aspects of my job. The best thing about this industry is that you’re constantly learning something new. No two days are the same and every sort brings a new challenge.

In my role as team leader, I also find it very rewarding to pass on my knowledge and watch people grow in the industry.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I’m a family man so I spend a lot of time with my children and my grandson. I also like watching football (soccer for our American colleagues!) and I’ve recently started doing PT sessions, which are great for your body and your mind.
